Abstract

We analyze the determinants of the nomination and success of the 592 women candidates and 128 women winners in the 345 municipalities in Chile between 2004 and 2012. With data from all 3.633 candidates, we assess the effect of party militancy, party quotas, incumbency, sex of the incumbent, poverty and schooling in municipalities. The sex of the incumbent is a defining variable. Where incumbent won sought re-election, the rate of women candidates and winners is higher than in municipalities with men or no incumbent candidates. The presence of women mayors generates incentives for other women to run as well.
