Abstract

The aim of this essay is to explain the relationship between politics and religion at the beginning of the concept of “reason of State” through the work of the piadmontese writer Giovanni Botero (1540-1617). The hypothesis tries to demonstrate how around the end of the sixteenth century this thinker tried to expose an art of government which, far from signifying secularization of political life, possessed a stretch connection with theological postulates and with those medieval ideas where politics were subordinated to Christian moral and religion. Within this context, the following items will be analyzed: the origin of power, the idea of Providence, the figure of the ruler against the Church and the limits of politics.
