Abstract

Thomas More’s Utopia can be read as a critical reflection about the right relation between ideal models and concrete practices of government. The text may present hints of moderate skepticism, which, while confronting rude pragmatism, also attempts to prevent against the dangers of visionary maximalism. Reflective moderation and critic of modern secularism are two recurrent issues in the thought of Leo Strauss, both of which have inspired the present essay.
