Why do unions restrain their wage demands in a context of economic growth? In this essay we will try to answer this question by analyzing the case of the Federación Argentina de Empleados de Comercio y Servicios (FAECyS).This union constitutes an interesting case of analysis, for it has restrained its wage demands more than other important unions. Based on a study of collective bargaining in the retail sector between the years 2003-2007, we will argue that conflicts between unions over the affiliation of workers, the relationship with the national government and the disputes within the National Confederation of Unions (CGT) seem to be relevant variables for the analysis of wage restraint.
